Lakes & water
A day at Lake Kaltern
Between Caldaro and Termeno, Lake Kaltern sits in a landscape of vineyards, orchards and Mediterranean vegetation. A circuit path follows the shore through contrasting sections: a protected biotope lies at the southern end, while designated areas accommodate bathing and recreation. This makes it possible to pair a walk with nature watching and, when the season and current conditions suit, time by the water. Plan the lake as a destination in its own right; Merano and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff belong to a different excursion area.

Get to know the shoreline on foot
The circuit is about 7.5 kilometres long and passes vines, orchards, wooded stretches and reed beds. The car park by the Lido is a useful starting point. Leave time for pauses because the scenery changes along the way. Walking at an unhurried pace gives you more chance to notice the transitions between cultivated land, woodland and wetland.
Explore the southern biotope with care
A protected biotope lies at the lake’s southern end, where habitats and wildlife take priority. Stay on designated paths and use marked observation points rather than entering the reed beds. This section is especially rewarding for visitors who want to experience the lake beyond its bathing areas.
Add vineyards or a viewpoint to the day
Lake Kaltern lies along the South Tyrolean Wine Road, and vineyards shape much of its surroundings. The ruins of Leuchtenburg above the lake make a separate walking excursion, with a broad view across the landscape noted by South Tyrol’s tourism portal. Treat it as an additional activity and check the route and conditions before setting out.
