Discover Salzburg’s Old Town as a couple
Salzburg’s historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The Old Town lies on both banks of the Salzach, so a useful visit takes in more than one side of the river. The Cathedral, Mozartplatz, St Peter’s, the festival halls and Hohensalzburg Fortress sit within the historic cityscape. Mirabell Gardens add a stop on the opposite bank. The official UNESCO city walk is a helpful framework, but it is not a short, consistently level promenade: Salzburg Tourism gives the route as about 7.2 kilometres and roughly two and a half hours of walking time alone. Sightseeing is extra, as are the climbs at Nonnberg and the fortress. For a couple’s outing, choose a focus and leave room for pauses.

Set a realistic time allowance
Use the UNESCO city walk as a framework and decide in advance whether you want to cover the full route. The stated duration is walking time, not time spent at individual places. If you plan to visit the Cathedral, St Peter’s or other sites indoors, allow additional time. A slower pace, photo stops and a shared break also shape the day. Avoid fitting the route into a short gap between other commitments.
Plan for both banks
The Old Town extends across both sides of the Salzach. Decide when you will cross the river instead of treating it only as a backdrop. Mirabell Gardens are on the opposite bank and can be planned as a separate section.
Allow for the climbs
The official walk includes climbs at Nonnberg and up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. That makes it different from a level riverside or lane stroll. If you want to see highlights without taking on every climb, check locally which sections suit your day; the facts here do not establish a particular transport option. Do not assume every listed sight needs the same amount of time. Pick a few that interest you most and leave the others as optional additions.
Before your trip
- • Treat the roughly 2.5 hours as walking time only; visits and breaks come on top.
- • Wear comfortable shoes and plan for the climbs at Nonnberg and the fortress.
- • Decide whether Mirabell Gardens fit into the same day or a separate visit.
Experiences are not necessarily child-free. The minimum age applies to each hotel.
