Explore Bodrum Castle and Museum Together

Bodrum Castle stands on rocky ground between two harbours and houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Plan the castle and museum as one visit: you move through a historic stronghold while exploring collections that include finds from shipwrecks in the region. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus belongs to the city’s wider history, but it is a separate place and works best as its own stop in your plans.

Read the castle as a historic site

The Knights Hospitaller built the castle between 1406 and 1523. Its rocky position between two harbours still shapes the experience of the site. Inside, towers bear the names of different countries, while courtyards, walls and passageways form part of the walk. Give yourselves time to take in the fortress as a whole instead of rushing from one display to the next.

Explore the museum collections

The museum is set within the castle and includes ancient objects recovered from shipwrecks off the regional coast. These collections bring the area’s maritime past into view alongside the fortress architecture. Visitor access can change, so check the museum’s current notices before travelling and leave some flexibility in your plans once you arrive.

Plan the harbour and mausoleum separately

After the castle and museum, continue your walk around the harbour directly below the fortress. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is a separate historic site on the peninsula, not a museum gallery or part of the castle visit. If you want to see both places, give the mausoleum its own stop and route rather than trying to squeeze it into the museum visit.

Before your trip

  • • Treat the castle and museum as one visit and allow time to move around the site.
  • • Check the operator’s current notices about visitor access before setting out.
  • • Plan the harbour and mausoleum as separate parts of your day.

Experiences are not necessarily child-free. The minimum age applies to each hotel.
